Atentamente
Señora Elgart
Hello and welcome to the new school year!
My name is Ms. Elgart. I hope you have all had a good summer. Now we are going to prepare ourselves for a very busy year in which you are going to learn a lot in Spanish class. I look forward to getting to know you as we begin the school year together. In order to begin successfully, the most important thing is to have a good attitude and to arrive to Spanish class well prepared everyday. Have a good school year and good luck!
Sincerely,
Ms. Elgart
Getting Started Successfully: Rules, Class requirements/Materials
I. The Rules:
1. Arrive to class on time and bring required materials. (notebook, book, homework, pen/pencil, etc)
2. Enter classroom quietly, take out notebook, complete the “Preguntas del Día” and take out your homework. (Get ready.)
3. Always remain seated and always raise your hand before speaking. (No shouting out answers, etc. unless given teacher permission.)
4. Always be respectful toward yourself, classmates, and the teacher at all times.
5. Follow schools rules at all times.
II. Class Requirements:
*To be brought to class daily!
** To be brought for designated class days/homework use
1. One Spanish notebook with rings and 3-4 dividers* (Recommendation: Buy a thin one, it is the lightest and takes up the least space in your locker and bag!)
2. Assignment Pad*
3. Pen/Pencil* (highlighter recommended)
4. Spanish/English dictionary** Be sure to have one at home for your essays and projects! (Sold at Barnes & Noble, most book sections at stores, etc.)
5. Spanish text book: * to be issued by school
III. Grading Policy: Homework, Quizzes, Tests, Missing Materials, and Behavior
A marking period grade reflects a student’s performance in the following areas:
1. Homework/Class preparation grade:
Homework is worth 20% of a grade. Howework credit will only be given to completed assignments presented in class and on the designated due date. Missing homework assignments, failure to bring a pen/pencil, a notebook or a textbook is equivalent to missing a homework. Come to class prepared! Homework will be assigned every week and may include text exercises, handouts, class projects, etc.
2. Tests: 40%
3. Quizzes: 30%
(Projects will fall under a quiz or test category.)
4. Class participation and behavior: 10%
Daily, class participation adherence to the classroom and school rules, and the ability to work well individually and in cooperative groups will increase a marking period grade.
Failure to follow the classroom and school rules, including missing class time due to disciplinary reasons, will result in a declining course grade as well as a teacher/student conference, after school detention, parent/guardian contact and/or school administrative involvement.
IV. Office Hours:
Office hours meet after school, every week, on the designated day or by appointment with the teacher. This is an opportunity for students to receive individual, extra help and is highly recommended, particularly before quizzes and tests.
Room: 330 Day: Tuesday/Thursday or by appointment
V. Make-ups:
Reminder: Under school policy, a student who skips a class on a quiz, test, project, etc. day, will not be allowed to make-up the grade/work.
*Make-up Options are arranged with the teacher: Office hours…
*Students are responsible for making arrangements with the teacher to make-up a quiz, test, or work. If a student has an excused absence from class for one day, the student has one day to make-up the work. In other words, if work is missed from one day, plan on making it up the next. A two day absence will allow for a two day make-up period, a one week class absence will allow for a week absence period and so on.
*Nurse: If a student goes to the nurse before Spanish class and remains in school, the student is responsible for obtaining the missed class work and for completing the work for the following day’s class*** In cases where there is a quiz, test, project or presentation, the student must make up the work on the day of their return.***
*Field Trip/Other Related Absence: Student is responsible for getting the work PRIOR to the absence.
*Grades not made up will remain a 0%*
VI. Class Format: A daily Spanish class will typically follow this format
l. Preguntadel día
ll. La tarea check off
lll. La conversacíon
lV. El repaso
